Even when an enterprise is over 125 years old – the Birkhäuser AG was founded in 1879 – its history interests its business partners only if they can get some kind of practical use from its development. For this reason we are glad to tell you where we got our experience and our competence.
One thing that has never changed is the fact that it is not the respective technology which determines the quality of the end product, but the professionalism of the people who deal with it.
Just as unlikely as it was in former times that the typecase with its lead letters could make a well-designed printed product all by itself, just as unlikely is it that the most modern computer-to-plate technology is useful without the people who master it completely. It goes without saying that we use the best and newest technology in all areas. That, however, is not the point: The Birkhäuser AG has invested an above-average amount of time and money all along in the training of apprentices and in the further education of its employees. This is something that our customers appreciate – and they have made us, among other things, into the largest printers of offset printed sheets in the northwest part of Switzerland. We thank you for your confidence!
Nobody can do everything alone.
Today’s customers want a partner who can print – and depending on the situation, also design – their visiting cards, their catalogs, their business report, the product packaging, adhesive labels, continuous sets, securities and everything else they need.
The fact that we can offer this without any great effort today is, however, a direct consequence of our firm’s history. Book printing, advertising materials printing, and rolling job printing were our very own domains all along. In 1985, the Birkhäuser AG was taken over by the «Basler Zeitung Medien», to which the Basler Zeitung (Basel Newspaper) also belongs. In 1990 there was a merger with the Graphic Works Coop, resulting in the Birkhäuser+GBC AG. The separation into two independent works for advertising and packaging printing and for special products was a logical consequence of the sequence of events. Our customers nevertheless get everything from one source.
When we stick together, nothing can stop us.
The Gelterkinden Continuous and Set Printing (EGB) was integrated into our company in 2002. To complete the range of products, Schnelli AG, a subsidiary company of the «Basler Zeitung Medien» (BZM) that is specialized in the printing of smaller-sized products, joined the group in 2006. Brands such as Etico, Printout and EGB have become a symbol of the variety of our range of products. In 2008 the two printing plants Birkhäuser+GBC AG and Birkhäuser+GBC Spezialprodukte AG merged together, before this date they both operated as separate plants owned by the Basler Zeitung Medien Group. With this act a further milestone could be set in the entire product and service range offered by this new company. All existing synergies are now optimally used and all duplicated work could be avoided for future. You only have to remember the name, Birkhäuser+GBC, however – and the fact that we can transform just about any assignment in connection with offset printing, letterpress printing, flexographic printing, silk-screen printing, Form printing, label printing and digital printing into a high-quality product. In 2009 Birkhäuser+GBC AG was forced to close down its two commercial web offset presses, due to the economic situation as well as structural changes. With the social partners an adequate social plan was elaborated.
You can rely on it: history will continue.
